    An Investigation of Purpose Built Netbooks for Primary School Education

    ABSTRACT This paper is a qualitative evaluation of student netbooks used in a classroom setting. Netbooks are thought to be one promising development in the next generation of learning devices, pairing everyday PC capabilities with a purposeful design built for students and schools. The findings suggest that the design is appropriate and engaging for the unique needs of individual primary school students. Nevertheless, the design and specifications of the netbooks do not yet address some classroomlevel practices that are crucial to the success of the technology in classrooms. This paper describes some of the key findings of this evaluation, as well as a summary of design considerations for the future design of mobile PCs for education

    Interoception and Autonomic Correlates during Social Interactions. Implications for Anorexia

    The aim of this study is to investigate the bodily-self in Restrictive Anorexia, focusing on two basic aspects related to the bodily self: autonomic strategies in social behavior, in which others’ social desirability features, and social cues (e.g., gaze) are modulated, and interoception (i.e., the sensitivity to stimuli originating inside the body). Furthermore, since previous studies carried out on healthy individuals found that interoception seems to contribute to the autonomic regulation of social behavior, as measured by Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA), we aimed to explore this link in anorexia patients, whose ability to perceive their bodily signal seems to be impaired. To this purpose, we compared a group of anorexia patients (ANg; restrictive type) with a group of Healthy Controls (HCg) for RSA responses during both a resting state and a social proxemics task, for their explicit judgments of comfort in social distances during a behavioral proxemics task, and for their Interoceptive Accuracy (IA). The results showed that ANg displayed significantly lower social disposition and a flattened autonomic reactivity during the proxemics task, irrespective of the presence of others’ socially desirable features or social cues. Moreover, unlike HCg, the autonomic arousal of ANg did not guide behavioral judgments of social distances. Finally, IA was strictly related to social disposition in both groups, but with opposite trends in ANg. We conclude that autonomic imbalance and its altered relationship with interoception might have a crucial role in anorexia disturbances

    Desire and Dread from the Nucleus Accumbens: Cortical Glutamate and Subcortical GABA Differentially Generate Motivation and Hedonic Impact in the Rat

    Background: GABAergic signals to the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell arise from predominantly subcortical sources whereas glutamatergic signals arise mainly from cortical-related sources. Here we contrasted GABAergic and glutamatergic generation of hedonics versus motivation processes, as a proxy for comparing subcortical and cortical controls of emotion. Local disruptions of either signals in medial shell of NAc generate intense motivated behaviors corresponding to desire and/or dread, along a rostrocaudal gradient. GABA or glutamate disruptions in rostral shell generate appetitive motivation whereas disruptions in caudal shell elicit fearful motivation. However, GABA and glutamate signals in NAc differ in important ways, despite the similarity of their rostrocaudal motivation gradients. Methodology/Principal Findings: Microinjections of a GABAA agonist (muscimol), or of a glutamate AMPA antagonist (DNQX) in medial shell of rats were assessed for generation of hedonic ‘‘liking’ ’ or ‘‘disliking’ ’ by measuring orofacial affective reactions to sucrose-quinine taste. Motivation generation was independently assessed measuring effects on eating versus natural defensive behaviors. For GABAergic microinjections, we found that the desire-dread motivation gradient was mirrored by an equivalent hedonic gradient that amplified affective taste ‘‘liking’ ’ (at rostral sites) versus ‘‘disliking’ ’ (at caudal sites). However, manipulation of glutamatergic signals completely failed to alter pleasure-displeasure reactions to sensory hedonic impact, despite producing a strong rostrocaudal gradient of motivation

    A Cluster Randomized-Controlled Trial of a Classroom-Based Drama Workshop Program to Improve Mental Health Outcomes among Immigrant and Refugee Youth in Special Classes

    <div><p>Objectives</p><p>The aim of this cluster randomized trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based theatre intervention program for immigrant and refugee youth in special classes for improving mental health and academic outcomes. The primary hypothesis was that students in the theatre intervention group would report a greater reduction in impairment from symptoms compared to students in the control and tutoring groups.</p><p>Methods</p><p>Special classrooms in five multiethnic high schools were randomly assigned to theater intervention (n = 10), tutoring (n = 10) or control status (n = 9), for a total of 477 participants. Students and teachers were non-blinded to group assignment. The primary outcome was impairment from emotional and behavioural symptoms assessed by the Impact Supplement of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) completed by the adolescents. The secondary outcomes were the SDQ global scores (teacher and youth reports), impairment assessed by teachers and school performance. The effect of the interventions was assessed through linear mixed effect models which incorporate the correlation between students in the same class, due to the nature of the randomization of the interventions by classroom.</p><p>Results</p><p>The theatre intervention was not associated with a greater reduction in self-reported impairment and symptoms in youth placed in special class because of learning, emotional and behavioural difficulties than a tutoring intervention or a non-active control group. The estimates of the different models show a non-significant decrease in both self-reported and impairment scores in the theatre intervention group for the overall group, but the impairment score decreased significantly for first generation adolescents while it increased for second generation adolescents.</p><p>Conclusion</p><p>The difference between the population of immigrant and refugee youth newcomers studied previously and the sample of this trial may explain some of the differences in the observed impact of the theatre intervention.</p><p>Trial Registration</p><p>ClinicalTrials.gov <a href="http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01426451?term=NCT01426451&rank=1" target="_blank">NCT01426451</a></p></div

    Apoptosis paves the detour path for CD8 T cell activation against intracellular bacteria.

    Intracellular bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis primarily infect macrophages. Within these host cells, the pathogens are confined to phagosomes and their antigens are secluded from the classical MHC I presentation pathway. Moreover, macrophages fail to express certain antigen presenting molecules like CD1 proteins. As a result of this intracellular lifestyle, the pathways for the induction of MHC I- and CD1-restricted CD8 T cells by such microorganisms remain elusive. Based on recent findings in tuberculosis and salmonellosis, we propose a new detour pathway for CD8 T cell activation against intracellular bacteria through apoptotic blebs from infected macrophages. Pathogen-derived antigens including proteins and lipids are delivered from infected cells to non-infected dendritic cells. Subsequently, these professional antigen presenting cells display microbial antigens through MHC I and CD1 to T cells. Thus, cross-priming mediated by apoptotic vesicles is not just a matter of antigen distribution, but an intrinsic immunological function due to the nature of phagosomally located intracellular bacteria. We consider infection-induced apoptosis the conditio sine qua non for antigen-specific CD8 T cell activation by phagosome-enclosed pathogens.
